A busy opening day at IBC 2016, demoing the latest member of the Sony XVS family, the XVS 6000. Along with its larger siblings, the XVS 7000 and XVS 8000, it’s a full 4K and HD switcher, with both conventional BNC video and IP inputs and outputs. On the stand I’ve been showing the IP link, controlling a remote XVS 8000 at Hilversum from one control panel at the RAI centre. 8 separate HD audio/video feeds are travelling between the two switchers, plus control and comms, all down a single 10Gb fibre link using Sony’s Network Media Interface (NMI). Pretty impressive, totally stable and all with minimal latency – the conversion from SDI to IP, the signal transmission and the re-conversion from IP to SDI all takes place in less than one video frame.
